The lucky ones who live to tell the tale return to orbit as veterans to transform exotic materials into advanced technology and undertake even more risky descents with their newly acquired knowledge. Those who are left behind... are lost forever.
There was a day when Icarus was meant to be the second Earth, but when terraforming failed, the air became toxic and killed humanity's hopes of colonizing a new world. Icarus became a parody, a symbol of humanity's failure to reach the stars. However, when xenobiologists discovered the cause of the failure, the exotic matter, it sparked new interest. These priceless "exotics" sparked a gold rush that exacerbated political tensions on Earth and attracted large numbers of prospectors to Icarus.
Its toxic atmosphere, wildlife, and damaging weather events make it clear that Icarus is a planet with a temper. Preparation and planning are essential, whether it's setting up shelter, finding a source of oxygen, stalking your next dinner, or stockpiling supplies to embark on a journey to uncharted lands.
First Retinue prospectors were granted initial mining licenses to explore more than 40 square miles of man-made terrain filled with hidden alcoves, resources to mine, and biomes to explore. Use the resources around you to survive: in every tree something can be found, in every rock there is a voxel to extract.
Use the planet's resources to create tools, structures and machines that protect you and aid you in your mission. Develop unique abilities and upgrade your basic talents as you gain experience on the planet's surface. Then return to orbit with rare exotic materials to create advanced technology. Choose the skills you want to develop on your next descent and the technology you want to obtain to complete missions faster, travel further, automate production or increase your chances of survival. Each of your decisions has an impact.
You can choose between sessions that last hours, days or weeks. But be careful, if you don't make it to your dropship in time to return to your orbital space station, no one will come to rescue you. Or give yourself time to build a permanent planetary outpost. Each descent has a clear objective and time limit, but overcoming the challenges is up to you.
Learn the peculiarities of the atmosphere, challenge yourself to face new threats and force yourself to leave your comfort zone. Those who are cautious will survive, but the brave will prosper.
